More and more business are realizing the importance of having visibility in search engines, especially local search results.  Many small businesses competing on the web, are actually competing against other small businesses in their geographical vicinity.  Due to this trend, Google and other major search engines have put a large emphasis on local search results.  If you were to conduct a search on Google for a mechanic in your local area you would type in mechanic, city, state.   With this type of search you will receive a result similar to the one below.

Notice that the results display with a map and a list of local results.  These results are listed above all other results on the search page.  There are several ways that your site can appear in local search results:

  1. You’ll want to integrate your geographical location into your web design.  Optimize the site with local and geographical information.  Include your geographic location within the page title and the content of your site.
  2. Search engines such as Google and Yahoo have local pages which you can create for your business.  List with the major search engines and   include  complete and geographically driven content
  3. Get tons of reviews.  Ask your customers to visit your local page and review your business.  One way to get reviews would be to send an email to your customers after an interaction with a link to your Google and Yahoo Local pages.
  4. You may not think of yourself as a writer, but as a small business owner, you are an expert in your niche.  Write about something that interests you and is relevant to your customers.  Write blogs and articles that build links using your geographical information as anchor for links.
  5. Write and distribute press releases.  Press releases are a great way to promote your business.  There are many web-based services that will distribute your press release to thousands of websites.  Include your geographical information and target keywords in the press release.

Following these 5 tips can help you show up in local search results, but there are many factors that effect where your site will rank.
