Do-it-yourself SEO vs. Hiring a Professional

This post has one comment.

The idea of writing this post came to me after living an experience I would like to share. So here it is….

Recently a potential client came to us with the idea of re-designing her website to make it look more professional as well as doing some SEO to generate leads. Her business is one of those Office Furniture Sales as well as some other diverse professional services. As we sat down and went through all the details and benefits of SEO blah blah blah (you know the story), she requested me to send her a proposal for SEO and Website Development. So I did; now keep in mind, our SEO proposal details all the areas of your site which can be improved, I mean, the whole nine yards (title tags, meta tags, link building, image optimization etc).

As savvy as my potential client is, she decided she could do SEO herself, and after she saw the detailed document she went “What? this is all I need, I am savvy enough to do this myself, especially with this information” (these words actually came out of her mouth as she told me later). She went ahead and contracted us for website Development and a “Keyword Analysis” so she knew which keywords to play around with. With this she saved 85% of the SEO contract money, smart right? WRONG!. Our client quickly realized that do-it-yourself SEO is not simple, especially for a competitive market such as hers.

Now, with this I am not implying you always need to hire a professional for SEO, but it is important to understand every piece of your plan through thorough analysis which inexperienced people will not be able to do. Search Engine Optimization is complex, time consuming and tedious, but most importantly, a lengthy, constant process.

In order for anyone to feel comfortable about doing their own  SEO, they must understand how to do:

  1. Keyword Analysis: to determine opportunity
  2. Current Position:  in order to baseline where you are and how your improvement will be measured (if any)
  3. Competitive Analysis: to see who you’re up against and what they are doing to be in there current ranked positions
  4. On-Page Optimization, taking in consideration: Keyword density, profitability and other aspects of SEO
  5. Content Optimization: strategically using the researched keywords to position them in the content without making it look silly
  6. Off-Page Optimization, which includes Link Building practices through article writing, link request (tedious tedious tedious), blog posting, forum posting etc
  7. Traffic Analysis: once all is done you can analyze how your keywords are performing, how much time people stay on your site. This will determine if you need to do re-engineering of your SEO

Today, there are several providers that offer ramped up tools that can manage some of the above outlined aspects, so it helps for the average to high-end technical person. However, the bottom line is that if you are focusing on growing a business and your experience is on your professional field, the best thing to do is to hire a professional.

SEO can be costly but it pays off big time when done correctly. The decision of doing SEO yourself or higher a professional is purely determined by your level of knowledge, your time and the overall budget required based on how competitive is your market.
