Is Twitter Overrated? Is Twitter Really Productive?

As much as I’m afraid to take a clear stand here, kind of like when politicians are asked about immigration or gay & lesbian rights when they’re running for president. And as much as I have my own “unofficial” opinion about Twitter’s real ability to yield any productive results, I will stand back and just reflection for a few minutes. I really want to know if Twitter has really helped revolutionize social media.
How much can be said in 140 characters or less? Are we saying that businesses can actually get some traction from a bunch of “tweets”? I will be honest, I don’t know, I have not tried Twitter to assist my company’s brand in any way; but my case is very B2B so maybe there are some good results I can hear about with the general consumers interacting with up and coming brands and new small businesses trying to emerge.
How demographic can you get with your Twitter followers? how can you group them? How effective it is to get people engaged in meaningful, productive discussions? I know for sure there are many people who really hate Twitter precisely due to it’s “intrinsically wrong and superficial nature”, I read someone say “I do not hate Twitter in the way that I hate stubbing my toe, or in the way that I hate Tracy Morgan. I hate Twitter in the same way that, say, Copernicus hated geocentrism. I’m not being irrational or hysterical – it is just that Twitter is so thoroughly wrong and so prolifically wrong that its very existence undermines our otherwise rational and mostly progressive society.” - and this post was seriously funny I must say.
I am going to say, many people feel Twitter is another reason to love social media, I will keep my opinion to myself, I don’t think I have researched enough to say otherwise. I can see how Social Media can represent a value for businesses and brand recognition, I just (for some strange reason) have not been called upon trying Twitter deep enough to have expert knowledge and opinion.

I ask myself the same question about social media in itself. I do agree that some websites are helpful in disseminating information and tooting your horn about your specialized industry knowledge. This may actually amount to something (followers) if you have a following that is interested. Ex. celebrities with fans, authors with content information, or just simple network of friends closing the communication gaps with status updates. I have not found much effective use or results of Twitter. I'm sure others would beg to differ. Like the ones who randomly request to follow you in hope of reciprocation.
