Using Google Alerts for Tracking Your Brand Online

This post has no comments.

Sorry for the long delay between posts, but we’ve had so many things happening in the past two weeks I’ve barely had a moment to sit down and write a post.  We are in the process of launching our new website redesign, we’ve hired two new interns, and we’re moving offices (same building, just a new office with a view!).  For small business owners, time is always a commodity, so I love when I find free tools that help me save a great deal of time.  One of those tools is Google Alerts.

If you’ve never heard of Google Alerts, it is a tool that allows you to set-up alerts on a variety of topics.  Say you want to find out everything that is happening in health care reform, you can setup a Google Alert that will send you an email notification every time a news item is indexed within your selected topic.  You can tell Google Alerts what type of content you want tracked (news, videos, blogs, comprehensive) and select relevant keywords.  We use this tool to track keywords that we are targeting for search engine optimization, and for our brand name.  Setting up a Google Alert for your brand name is a great way to get started with this tool.  By setting up an alert for your brand, you can track where the conversations are happening about your business and engage with those customers.  You can also track when pages are being indexed by search engines.  There is a great post at SmallBiz Trends that details how to get more from Google Alerts.  I recommend checking it out.
